My name is Craig Spence and I am an historian of early modern urban culture and society. I’m writing this website/blog to disseminate some of my current research related to sudden violent death in the late 17th and early 18th century. Those of you who know me will be aware that I have been working on this material for sometime … having successfully submitted my thesis I have now adapted the study for publication as a research monograph and I’m pleased to say that Accidents and Violent Death in Early Modern London: 1650-1750 will be published by Boydell & Brewer in late 2016! My principal previous research on this period focused on the social geography of metropolitan London. This was published as a monograph by the Institute of Historical Research University of London in 2000 as; London in the 1690s: a social atlas.
I am currently Senior Lecturer in History at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln in the UK.
