About Me

My name is Dr Craig Spence and I am a historian of early modern urban culture and society. I’m writing this website/blog to disseminate some of my research related to sudden violent death in late 17th and early 18th century England. Those of you who know me will be aware that I have been working on this material for some time, I have now adapted my doctoral thesis for publication as a research monograph and I’m pleased to say that Accidents and Violent Death in Early Modern London: 1650-1750 was published by Boydell & Brewer in late 2016! My principal previous research on this period focused on the social geography of metropolitan London. That work was published as a monograph by the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, in 2000 as;  London in the 1690s: a social atlas.

I am currently an independent researcher and until recently was employed as Senior Lecturer in History at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln in the UK.
